What is Dabbing?

Updated: March 25, 2025

Cannabis wax is one of the most versatile products on our menu – something you can use to make THC-infused edibles, amplify the potency of any flower, or enjoy sublingually. Waxes are also the product of choice for concentrate enthusiasts who appreciate the intense flavor and effects of flash vaporization – a consumption method known throughout the cannabis community as dabbing.

Whether you’re dabbing our “budder,” “badder,” “sugar,” or “shatter,” you can count on a uniquely powerful experience and long-lasting effects. You can also count on the cannabis experts at The Superior Dispensary for insightful product recommendations based on the overall effect you’re hoping to achieve. In the meantime, we thought you might appreciate the following overview. We’ll cover what dabbing is, the type of hardware you’ll need, and more.

Topic Overview: A Brief Explanation of Dabbing

Dabbing wax is a lot like vaping. Utilizing the increasingly popular concentrate consumption method requires placing a small amount of cannabis wax onto a pre-heated surface and inhaling the vapor created as the concentrate melts and evaporates. Cannabis traditionalists often prefer using a torch and a dab rig. Medical and adult-use consumers also have the option of investing in a dab pen – a battery-powered alternative similar to a vape pen.

Demystifying the Process: How to Use a Dab Rig and Torch

Dab rigs are similar in form and function to a standard water pipe or bong. But instead of having a bud-filled bowl, a small amount of concentrate is placed into a heat-tolerant, bucket-like chamber called a nail. Most are typically made of quartz, ceramic, borosilicate, or titanium. The vapor produced by placing wax on a hot nail is immediately cooled by the water in your rig before it’s inhaled.

The nail on a dab rig needs to get extremely hot to vaporize wax. You’ll need to use a lighter or torch to heat the chamber to 545 to 570 degrees Fahrenheit (or higher). Lower nail temperatures preserve the flavorful terpenes in waxes; higher temperatures tend to intensify the effects of their THC. Although dabbing can take a few tries to master, the process is relatively simple. To use a dab pen, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Although dab rigs can take a few tries to master, the process is relatively simple.

  • Use a dab tool to liberate a small (grain of rice-sized) amount of wax
  • Heat the bottom of the nail with a torch until it begins to turn red
  • Let the nail cool for 10 seconds for titanium or 45-60 seconds for quartz
  • Apply your dab of wax to the nail using the dab tool and begin inhaling slowly
  • Use a carb cap to cover and uncover the nail while inhaling to regulate airflow
  • Rotate the dab tool against the nail to vaporize all the wax

Exploring the Advantages of Dabbing

Smoking weed can have a negative impact on the overall taste of Mother Nature’s most flavorful cannabis strains. Although dabbing is a bit more labor-intensive than smoking or vaping, most dabbers appreciate how the consumption method allows the flavor of their wax to shine through. Consumers who choose dabbing (or vaping) over flower and pre-rolls also reduce their exposure to potentially harmful byproducts associated with smoke inhalation. Although cannabis concentrates and waxes cost a bit more than flower, pre-rolls, and edibles, they’re a lot more potent – meaning a little goes a long way. Plus, concentrates tend to have a longer shelf life.
