Dab rigs are similar in form and function to a standard water pipe or bong. But instead of having a bud-filled bowl, a small amount of concentrate is placed into a heat-tolerant, bucket-like chamber called a nail. Most are typically made of quartz, ceramic, borosilicate, or titanium. The vapor produced by placing wax on a hot nail is immediately cooled by the water in your rig before it’s inhaled.
The nail on a dab rig needs to get extremely hot to vaporize wax. You’ll need to use a lighter or torch to heat the chamber to 545 to 570 degrees Fahrenheit (or higher). - Use a dab tool to liberate a small (grain of rice-sized) amount of wax
- Heat the bottom of the nail with a torch until it begins to turn red
- Let the nail cool for 10 seconds for titanium or 45-60 seconds for quartz
- Apply your dab of wax to the nail using the dab tool and begin inhaling slowly
- Use a carb cap to cover and uncover the nail while inhaling to regulate airflow
- Rotate the dab tool against the nail to vaporize all the wax
